The Pathologists at Pocono Medical Center are Board Certified in Anatomic and in Clinical Pathology. Additional subspecialty training is provided for interpretation of fine needle aspiration, gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens. Pathology and Frozen Section services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as clinically indicated. The Pocono Medical Center Pathologists actively participate in quality control, quality assurance, and quality improvement programs within the multiple specialty areas of the laboratory including Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, Transfusion Medicine, and General Laboratory Services.

Description of Services:
Surgical Pathology – The Pathologists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to assist Pocono Medical Center’s surgeons and referring physicians in the interpretation of biopsy specimens for final anatomic diagnosis.
Multiple special stains and techniques are used in the work-up of the individual cases. The department has available additional reference lab testing for those more highly specialized services such as Flow Cytometry, Cytogenetics and Immunohistochemistry.
Cytology Services – An extensive cytology service is available both for the interpretation of gynecological (pap smear and liquid base cytology) specimens along with non-gynecologic specimens.
In addition, Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) service is available for rapid adequacy in Physician’s offices, ultra-sound and/or cat-scan.
Quality Assurance – The laboratory has instituted numerous quality assurance programs to provide the highest level of service to physicians and patients. These services include availability of outside consultative services through nationally recognized university centers of excellent and additional reference laboratory services for special techniques not provided at the hospital.
A second pathologist reviews all cases diagnosed as malignant at Pocono Medical Center in an effort to provide the highest level of quality and accuracy.
